Mark Alcock

Professional Qualifications

MSc
BSc (CNAA)
Chartered Engineer
Member of the Institution of Materials, Minerals and Mining

Career Profile

Mark Alcock's core professional expertise is in Mining and Risk Management.

Since 1994 he has focused on Risk Management, first within the Insurance industry and latterly in project risk management. As a Risk Consultant with Alexander Forbes he carried out assignments assisting clients in the mining, manufacturing and service industries, to understand their asset risk profile, the quality of their risk management and cost for the company to be in business. He also produced underwriting reports for the placing of insurance programmes.

In 1998 Mark moved to BAE SYSTEMS Astute Class Ltd as a Senior Risk Analyst progressing to Risk Manager for the £2bln nuclear powered attack submarine project. Here he enhanced aspects of and ran the risk process as well as providing a risk service to all project managers and directors. This included risk training, awareness programmes, facilitation of workshops, analysis of risk data and working together with the major subcontractors and Defence Procurement Agency to achieve a quality risk system.

Mark joined TMC in 2002 to take an interim risk management role at Metronet Rail SSL (MRSSL) to provide the expertise to raise the overall risk management maturity and assist in the implementation of Active Risk Manager. He was subsequently asked to be the Interim Risk Manager for MRSSL and following the success of the risk strategy approach, MRSSL’s sister company MRBCV adopted the same route.

Currently Mark is working on the new £3.4bln Aircraft Carrier project again focusing on raising the risk management ability of all staff

Before moving into Risk Management, Mark worked for 8 years in the Mining Industry working in operations in Botswana, Cornwall and Canada. Following this period he spent 2 years as a Mining Analyst in the City of London and subsequently completed an MSc in Mineral production Management at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College in 1989.

Richard Watson

Professional Qualifications

BSc (Eng)
Chartered Engineer
Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers

Career Profile

Richard Watson has over 15 years experience in Risk Management, although his involvement with risk-sharing contracts and their delivery stretches back over 30 years . Working with risk specialists outside the project and programme arena, he has co-developed concepts and provided tools that can enable cross discipline risk communication, and effective risk management that seeks to draw from best practice irrespective of its discipline of origin. This has developed into the Risk-based Management approach that TMC now actively apply. His earlier career in client-side project management, and as an engineering manager in the cost and time concious contracting industries, brings with it a pragmatic and practical approach, and an awareness of costs and business financial management. This commercial understanding also covers an active participation in providing engineering and project management analysis for supporting major contractual claims, and claim defences.

Currently involved with issue, risk and opportunity management in a major defence support programme. Recent work has included rail, oil & gas, agro-chemical and public building projects and programmes. A commitment to future generations is demonstrated by active MSc supervision, lecturing and commercial training activities
