2009

• Continuing interim Enterprise Risk Manager Contract in the Telecoms Services Division of EADS Astrium.
• Continuing support to a major Defence upgrade programme.
• A third assignment to the major defence contractor, integrating the earlier issue, risk and opportunity work with the Management Decision Assumption Log and the proposed on-contract proposed continuous improvements, and to be actively involved in bid definition, costing and pricing.
• Increased the involvement with Warwick Management Group, University of Warwick with commitments to MSc lecture provision on project management related courses.

2008

• Autumn Carried out an internal TMC research project to expand the TMC Risk Based Management model to incorporate Roadmapping, thereby further enhancing the model's overall applicability, and a stronger definition of the Roadmapping process.
• July Awarded interim Enterprise Risk Manager Contract in the Telecoms Services Division of EADS Astrium, reporting to the Governance Director. Telecoms Services runs a number of multimillion £ secure satellite communications service delivery contracts for the UK and EU military and government agencies.
• Until end June ongoing interim programme management contract with SkyNet 5 Military Communications satellite programme covering Risk Management (both bottom up and top down), Resource Planning & Estimating and Scheduling with 'what if' models. Reporting to the Engineering and Programme Directors. Three SkyNet 5 satellites were operational by June and the system was nearing Final Operational Service status.
• Risk Management support to a major Defence upgrade programme involving pioneering the roll-out of tools Pertmaster and Active Risk Manager.
• Enhanced and simplified the use of the integrated issue, risk and opportunity process and the understanding and risk management commitment of the client's team increased on a further assignment with the major defence contractor.
• Increased the involvement with and the commitment to MSc project supervision and to commercial training with Warwick Management Group, University of Warwick.

2007

• All year ongoing interim programme management contract with EADS Astrium Terminals and Products Division covering Risk Management (both bottom up and top down), Resource Planning & Estimating and Scheduling with 'what if' models. Reporting to the Engineering Director on the SkyNet 5 Programme.
• Transformed the Risk Management approach for a new programme for a major defence contractor moving towards a stronger commitment to support provision business. This developed an integrated approach to the management of issues, risks and opportunities, their costing and their on-contract funding. This was developed from the unique TMC 'Circle of Risk' approach.

2006

• All year ongoing interim programme management contract with EADS Astrium covering Risk Management (both bottom up and top down), Resource Planning & Estimating and Scheduling with 'what if' models.
• September commenced part time support of programme and risk management MSc student projects at Warwick University.
• August completed work on the future aircraft carrier at Filton, Bristol
• August commenced a risk management consultancy role on the Edinburgh Tram.
• First half carried out forensic programme and risk management consultancy tasks for Kingsfield Consulting, working in Japan.

2005

• November commenced and interim risk manager role on the future aircraft carrier project based at BAE Systems, Filton, Bristol.
• October commenced an interim programme manager contract with EADS Astrium
• August to December carried out 2 consultancy contracts with Kingsfield Consulting covering claims major engineering contracts in the oil / gas industry.
• January to May carried out 3 consultancy contracts for Metronet Rail SSL covering Requirements Engineering and Risk Management in addition to the 2 ongoing interim management roles.

2004

• September Held a risk management workshop for the UK National Audit Office
• Ongoing interim management contracts for BAE Systems (till May) and Metronet Rail (all year) covering risk management and the financial recovery for impacted risk from the client organisation.

2003

• November Engaged by NHS Information Authority to provide a project manager for the CHD Datasets Project. Immediate objective is to initiate the project. Goals will then be (i) to define the requirements for secondary use of information associated with cardiac rehabilitation, heart failure and CHD-related patient experience; and (ii) to develop the dataset standards needed to satisfy these requirements. Secondary uses include service planning, the commissioning of services, performance management, audit and clinical governance.
• November TMC signed an agreement of association with idRisk, a company offering a complementary service to TMC in the areas of insurance and Health & Safety risk.
• October Engaged by Quintec Ltd as part of their team supporting the Thales Watchkeeper Prime Contract Management Office (PCMO). Watchkeeper is a major programme for the acquisition of unmanned air vehicles to be used by the British army. At the end of 2003, Thales and Northrop Grumman were competing for award of the strategically important contract for demonstration, manufacture and in-service support (DMIS) of the next generation UAV capability, a contract valued in excess of ?500M. Alec Fearon of TMC Ltd was responsible for facilitating a series of risk brainstorm sessions, spanning all areas of the PCMO, to inform the development of technical and commercial strategies underpinning the Thales proposal for DMIS. He then documented the programme-level risks emerging from this process in the Risk Register to be submitted as part of the Thales bid.
• August Engaged by South Devon Health Informatics Service to prepare the Outline Business Case for a primary care clinical data repository to be procured as as a three-PCT collaboration.

  BAE Systems Chairman's Award for Innovation

  TMC won a Bronze BAE Systems Chairman's Award for Innovation for incorporating the use of its Cause -Effect analysis techniques to enhance the reporting of risk for Senior Management.  The approach improves both the understanding and the control of Project and Business risk, improving project schedule performance and reducing costs.

  Supplementing the bottom-up analysis with top-down Cause - Effect analysis leads to customers having increased confidence in performance, schedule and cost adherence, with the associated advantages for funding and insurance.  It is suitable for medium to large projects and business units.

  The approach was developed because the standard reporting systems (variations on the 'top-ten' risks and based on a bottom-up risk register) have been shown to be insufficient for effective understanding and control at a senior level, where the top-down view may differ from the sum of the bottom-up.  It is based on robust systems engineering methodologies applied in a management system.

  A case study on this project and the application of the methodology used is the subject of a paper to be presented at the 6th Annual Risk Conference, sponsored by Project Manager Today in London on 28 November 2003. Download Paper (pdf)

• May Infraco SSL became Metronet SSL. TMC Interim Risk Manager contract was extended into 2004
• March BAE Systems extended the EFA DASS support contract to utilise further TMC staff to implement and run their risk management system until Dec 2003.
  TMC reached agreement with two small risk management companies which would provide complementary services to support the company's clients.  They are David Morton Associates, insurance and business continuity risk and John Knott Associates, business / project risk consultancy and support software.
• February Awarded contract to carry out 'project assurance' role within the ASEPTIC project. Sponsored by the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, the project is carrying out an independent review of computerised systems for alert organism and alert condition (surgical site infection) surveillance. Its aim is to recommend which of the currently available systems could be used more widely for local, regional and national surveillance in England. (Link)
